"Bol" or "बोल".
The Hindi word for 'talk.'
See, I've always had an issue with this word as instead of using the usual pleasantries, most Indians will simply answer the phone with this one-syllable word.
No hello, no how are you just talk as if you have somehow interrupted their day in an inexplicably unforgivable way. Now, before I get attacked, yes, I understand that is not intended to be rude at all- but it has always bothered me. That was until about a month ago when I was asked to create a publication of my choosing by one of my professors. For days, I racked my brain on how to make this publication unique- on how to make it matter somehow, and then one day, I called my boyfriend, and he answered the phone "Bol." As I started to yell at him, something just clicked.
I realized that I had never really found a space where Indians like me who had moved away from India or were simply part of this new modern age of South Asians where I could just 'Bol.' There was no place for me to showcase my perspective or tell my stories and connect with others who had similar opinions or experiences without being thought of us too Indian or too western. So I created it- and now I want to expand on it.
Instead of staying just one fashion publication, I've decided to make Bol a permanent part of my blog. It will no longer just be about fashion but a space in which this new generation of South Asians can come and read and talk about the things that matter to us. As a result, hopefully, we can connect in a way that hasn't really been done before.
Now, I'm not sure how many times a week or even a month I'll be posting, and to be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly sure what I'll be writing. But I am so excited to start this new chapter and to see what it becomes.
