Saint Laurent: A Dirty Little Secret.

Yves Saint Laurent. They are edgy, they are controversial, and they are empowering.


Recently, I had the opportunity to create a mock advertisement campaign for Saint Laurent, but with an added twist. My team and I had to show the essence of the brand (obviously) but also depict where we believe the company is going, and how it's going to change and grow in the future. Basically, we were the new creative directors of our chosen brand. Perfect project for me, right?


I love Saint Laurent because it is a brand that embodies the badass woman, anyone could tell you that, but I believe they are going to take one step further and stand for a look that is even bolder and edgier than ever before. So with that in mind, I added rips into the advertisement campaign. If you know the brand, you know this is entirely against the traditional geometric, clean cut placement of their logo and extra information, but I did it to show that they are not just another cookie-cutter brand. I genuinely believe they are going to grow into a company that refutes societal expectations of the prim and proper woman. They are going to tear a hole in the idea of what is and isn't feminine. Plus, it coincides to the fact that I had the most fantastic dog on set with me, that I guarantee would have ripped my ads to shreds if I'd given her a physical copy.


I also decided to take the looks to a new level, by not only showcasing nudity, which Saint Laurent advocates, but by completing the shoot in the pouring rain in the middle of an abandoned warehouse, that was located god knows where. The aspect of the model being covered in water significantly added to the sexual connotations of the shoot, and allowed me to move the company further towards its controversial and provocative image. My goal was to create a look that still had the sophisticated yet grunge look that the brand's reputation is synonymous with, but, with a level of dirt and grime added into the mix of rock'n'roll glamour.

Now I know this shoot was an assignment and yes it was for this particular brand but, every time I curate something it invariably end's up meaning something to me beyond its initial purpose of a grade or a selling technique. To me, this is a shoot about a promiscuous woman who is not afraid to show her love of all things sex, fun, and a lack of responsibility. In short, she cares very little for the opinion of others and lives her life to the fullest without a care in the world. She is a woman of confidence who walks into a room and immediately all eyes are on her. Ultimately she is the woman I believe every human being yearns to be at least one point in their lives, she is a dirty little secret that has come alive.
